For this assignment, I chose the online only publication, Bustle magazine. It is a very popular feminist magazine, and I wanted to create a print version of the magazine. Although there is not an original print magazine, I think my art is substantial and looks better than the online publication. For the logo, I wanted to do something bold to represent today’s women who is bold. However, to draw from the online logo, I kept the line and dip. I chose the cover photo to be Millie Bobby Brown from “Stranger Things” because she is very relevant and popular, as season 2 just came out and they have written about her. My favorite blurb is from one of the features titled, “What Actually Happens When Women Run & Win Elections”. Instead, I changed it to: Nevertheless, She Persisted, which is a play at Sen. Elizabeth Warren rapid fire questioning and the fact that women are still fighting everyday, even after Hilary Clinton’s loss. I also included a jab at Maxine Water’s famous remark of “reclaiming her time” in the subhead. I think this is something most Bustle readers will get and appreciate.
I also wanted to include a wellness part because that is very important to their brand and to include something about the holidays because it is November. I also made sure to find a blurb that used the number 11 because Millie’s character on the show is named Eleven. Although this is subtle, it would get some readers’ attention. I also incorporated pink to add a color that pops, but also is a color mainly associated with women. Although I like my design, one thing I would change is the pink on the “Talks Stranger Things.” I think it is hard to read. I kept the color because it helps with the harmony of the design overall.
