- Outline the architectural features of a byzantine basilica
The Byzantine Empire is sometimes known as the Roman Empire or eastern Roman Empire and it embodies imperial power and Christian glory. A basilica is a Latin word and is frequently known as a large long hall used for courts or public assemblies. They are usually linked together because a basilica is the only building created by the Roman Empire.
A basilica nowadays has more than one definition. It can be a large hall used for courts and public assemblies or it can be used for Christian buildings and nave, apses, narthex, aisles, and much more. And it is also known for it to be Roman Catholic Church that has been accorded certain privileges by the pope.
The first Roman form basilica was built in Rome in 184 BC by Aemilius Lepidus and marcus fuluius nobilor and is called the Aemilius Basilica. The Aemilius basilica was made out of marble and a figurine tiled roof. Many people rave about how famous this basilica is and how it is the best example of byzantine architecture. The saint mark basilica was built in the 11th century got burned down in 976 and was rebuilt twice and the last time was in 1063 AD. The saint marks basilica was 76.50 meters long and 62.50 meters wide and contained 5 domes. The saint marks was nicknamed “the church of gold” from the beauty of the mosaics it contained and it often resembled wealth and power. When the church was burned down the mosaics got burnt too therefore many things changed from the day they built it until today but the gold mosaics did not change.
