The Byzantine Empire is widely responsible for the advancement of the cause of foreign policy. The Byzantine Empire survived and grew for over 1,100 years by skillfully handling foreign policy. The Byzantine Empire has a strong record for using diplomacy as a means of handling foreign policy. The influence the Byzantines possessed in diplomacy, or the profession, activity, or skill of managing international relations, typically by a country’s representatives abroad, was one of their strongest. The Byzantines most likely began the practice of sending regular diplomatic reports home to the government, a strategy which is extremely common in the handling of foreign policy today; foreign diplomats from the United States, as well as many other places in the world, are likely to keep their respective government as informed as possible, utilizing the technology we now have available in modern times. The Byzantine Empire was actively involved in manipulating internal events in other countries. It possessed an extremely ahead-of-its-time system for gathering and interpreting intelligence, and possibly even instigating rebellion. This system can be seen in the modern-day United States organizations of the CIA (Central Intelligence Agency), FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation), and their numerous foreign equivalents, such as the United Kingdom’s M1-6 and France’s DCRI (the Central Directorate of Interior Intelligence). The Byzantines are proof that a country does not necessarily need an overwhelmingly large military or strong economy in order to accomplish goals, which is an idea that many places throughout the world could learn from, regardless of whether or not they agree with the Byzantine’s handling of foreign
