Understanding politics, media and how reporters get it wrong
In the Standish room at the University at Albany money, media and politics were the topic discussed with the faculty and students. This is the second “Campus Conversations in Standish” aim to showcase faculty and students of the UAlbany community in an exchange of ideas and views. Rosemary Armaro, who is the Director of the Journalism program and WAMC commentator discusses her presentation titled “The 2016 Election: What Happens When New Money Converges with New Media” by expressing her personal views and the mistakes that reporters make.

The problem with the media, Armaro explained, journalist are sensational junkies and politics have become all about entertainment now. When a reporter does cover political stories it is so freaking boring that no one reads it, and if they do they don’t remember it,” she said.
“On the internet it has open up a whole new, making fun of politicians. Many people that we teach or among us today get their information from politics don’t get it from the New York Times they get it from Saturday Night Live. Snl had Tina Fey spoof Sarah Palin in a skit a few years back, Palin is still being quoted for the things she never said. That’s how messed up it is,”Armaro said.
Another problem is that presidential candidates have the ability to command the coverage they are receiving. Armao mentioned the role money played in Republican candidate Donald Trump’s campaign. Up until this point all of his interviews have been at Trump Tower, almost as advertisement for himself.
