This letter is concerning Canada’s debate on whether to banish plastic straws or not. As an aspiring marine biologist, dedicated viewer of the BBC Blue Planet documentary series, and frequent Hawaiian traveler, there is enough disturbing evidence available for all to supporting the negative impact of straws case of it is evident that Canada must ban the use of plastic straws,
Firstly, many vital and beautiful sea creatures like the Hawksbill Sea Turtle, Vaquita Dolphin, and Blue Whale have become endangered due to humanity’s carelessness. While this debate is being discussed, sea creatures are gobbling up the rubbish humans toss away without a second thought. From the Ocean Crusaders website, individuals learn that, “...on average, 100,000 marine creatures a year die from plastic entanglement and these are the ones that are found. Although it may be true that getting rid of the plastic straw industry in Canada may negatively impact the economy, Canadians should look at the big picture - the need to look for new jobs as opposed to contributing to the Earth’s destruction. It’s a positive asset that Canada is a strong and wealthy country that can afford a short-term crack in the economy, and will not have to worry about any devastating effects.

In the meantime, Canadians need to ask, why has the government not taken action yet? Why have the politicians representing the citizens not thought twice about this ecological decree? Why is the government not placing importance on the negative impact straws have on sea creatures? Humans are the ones in total control of the planet, so is it fair that other creatures suffer due to human negligence? Selfishness will continue to allow 32,623,490 of Canadians to continue to litter recklessly, just in order to keep our already
