Transgender’s Denied Being a transgender woman or man has not been easy for many centuries. Controversies such as marriage, sex, aids, and blood donations can overcome their lives. Blood donations has been one of those controversies that have been an ongoing discriminator against transgenders. Within the past 6 months, major newspapers such as Windsor Star and Toronto Sun have covered stories on transgenders being denied donating blood by the Canadian Blood Services. The Canadian Blood Services slogan “It’s in you to give” clearly has some discrepancies to it. Canadian Blood Services issued a report nation wide that it was short 7,500 pints of blood as of October 8th (Martin, 2014). With a shortage of 7,500 pints of blood, transgenders are not one of the individuals that are eligible to donate. Fair consideration needs to given to transgenders especially those who meet all of the Canadian Blood Donor policies. As a society we need to start advocating for transgenders and stop discriminating them because of their lifestyle choice. For this to happen more funding for prevention care and treatment for HIV/AIDS needs to be available. Getting those treatments will allow more people including transgenders to be able to donate. Thus, decreasing the major shortage of blood needed from the nation. Being a nursing student we learn that the blood is tested for various diseases that can be infectious. With that being said why turn a transgender who knows that their clean from HIV/AIDS just because of an extra form or forms that needs to be filled out? This problem just becomes more about laziness instead of discrimination at this point. “It’s in you to give” clearly should not be the slogan of the Canadian Blood Services if problems as these are arising (Agency,
