Parasites are defined as a plant or animal that lives on or in an organism of another species from which it derives sustenance or protection without benefit to, and usually with harmful effects on, the host. Parasites can cause many physical problems such as anemia, intestinal obstructions, vomiting, diarrhea weight loss and an overall unhealthy and poor condition. (North Rad Veterinary) There are three main categories of parasite in canines: intestinal worms, heartworms and fleas. Intestinal parasites include roundworms, tapeworms, hookworms, and whipworms. Second is heartworms that "live in the heart and the blood vessels of the lung" and can actually generate death in a pet".(North Rad Veterinary) Dogs can acquire heartworms through mosquitoes as they "injects heartworm larvae under the skin where they feed." (North Rad Veterinary) These parasites are able to migrate to the heart and lungs where they develop into adult worms over a period of six months. They eventually cause blood clots and increase stain on the heart which eventually turns into heart failure." (North Rad Veterinary) Heartworms are the most fatal and dangerous of all internal parasites. Once a heartworm prognosis is made it is usually too late to repair the damage that has already been done.
