When you look at the death penalty system in action, you realize that the only purpose it serves is revenge and that there is a serious and continuing risk of executing innocent people and that society has other ways to protect itself.
Good morning all. Today I’m going to inform you on why I strongly believe that capital punishment should not be reintroduced to Australia.
I’m against the death penalty not because of sympathy for criminals but because it isn’t effective in reducing crime, costs a whole lot more than life in prison, and worst of all it risks executions of innocent people.
129 people on death rows have been released with proof that they were wrongfully convicted. That is one hundred and twenty nine lives that could have been taken for false conviction. Now just imagine all the people who have been innocent yet their lives taken from them. DNA, available in less than 10% of all homicides, can’t guarantee we won’t execute innocent people. If someone is convicted and later found innocent you can release him from prison, but not from the grave.
Between the death penalty and life imprisonment the main focus should really be.. What is best for our country? And the answer to that is simple. It is a proven fact that the death penalty does not keep us safer. Homicide rates for states that use the death penalty are consistently higher than for those that don’t. The most recent FBI data
