The life of an inmate or a person should not be taken for a crime committed. Ed Lyon mentions that, “mentally ill Americans are often denied the treatment and evidence they need”, these people often end up in jail. In Brian Stevenson's book, “Just Mercy” he acknowledges that “ 1 out of 3 black men between 18-30 are in prison” (Stevenson; Just Mercy). In contrast, many people incarcerated from the white community are found guilty, showcasing that the innocent percentage is largely from the black community. Similarly, some people are convinced that the large number of black people incarcerated is because they are committing crimes. In his opinion, Eli Leher criticizes that “ blacks get arrested at the same high rates” even in places “ where the political establishment is entirely African American”. People who stand by this often think black people are overrepresented, which in most cases is crucial to fighting against inequality, which they believe is no longer present. The main issue not taken into consideration is that the source for his information is from a place that is one of the few that results in black people not being discriminated against.
