At first, it was discovered by a Dutch sailor for the first time in 1606. Afterwards, some Spanish and French sailors went there too but it was England who colonized Australia while it was under the reign of King Georges II. Later on, they began to send their criminals, their prostitutes as they were considering this island as a wild and uncivilized land.

The most known cities are Sidney and Melbourne; often mistaken as the capital because of their fame and their big surface area. Sydney is very cosmopolitan with more than 250 languages spoken and a famous opera situated there. Melbourne is Australia’s cultural capital and is situaded along the coast. As for why Canberra is the capital, it's because Sydney and Melbourne were "fighting" to become the capital and the government decided it would be Canberra so there wasn't any favoritism.
One thing easily noticeable about the Australians is their unique accent. It’s not really certain if it’s more British or American. When we think about the history of the country, we know that it has been influenced by all the colonizations, mostly by England which really « adopted » the land. It’s commonly found as lazy and hardly understood because when we hear it, it feels like some parts of the words aren’t pronounced, ie. Saying –ah instead of –er. Through History, art has involved and became clearly European like, and with time they have lost their original style. But in the 20th century, we can see a huge come back of the original and so Aboriginal style.
Such as art, another important part of Australian culture has evolved wit time, literrature. They even have a Nobel Price of literature winner named Patrick White. Another well-known author is Liane Moriarty who wrote Big Little Lies which made the New York Times Best Seller list in 2014.
Moreover, music is also important there. They have a lot of good and well-known musicians like the Bee Gees and Kylie Minogue. They have also been part of the Eurovision song contest for two years and each time they did fairly well.
There are some other specificities in the Australian culture, for example: food, the most famous one is definitely “vegemite”, it’s a spreadable paste made from leftover brewer’s yeast and usually they add some spices to it. It’s a really particular taste that isn’t specially appreciated by
