Cardiothoracic surgeons specialize in operating on the heart and lungs. They have many important duties and must be well trained, as they can easily get put into situations that, when not handled correctly, the patient may die. They have to be highly qualified, serving at least 8 years of school and 6 to 7 years of internships and residency. There are many great medical schools and hospitals one can attend that can provide the information necessary to become a qualified cardiothoracic surgeon. There are many good reasons to pursue a career in this field, as people everyday suffer from operable heart issues, and there are many diseases that still have yet to be researched for a cure. As a surgeon, one must be a quick thinker, and good at reviewing all possibilities. They have to be able to review test results and recognize any abnormalities as the patient has trusted them with their life. Surgeons have to take a patient’s medical history into account as well, as sometimes a certain drug cannot be administered due to allergies or risk of worsening the condition. Often, surgeons will have to recommend or design plans of treatment, and update charts and patient information to show new findings and plans of treatment.
