Last Wednesday (January 6th) In Lansing New York at a mine called Cargill salt mine, 17 salt miners were lowered into the ground on a small elevator. Halfway down at approximately 800 feet below the surface, the elevator stopped and the miners were trapped inside of a small, freezing area for almost 10 hours. To keep the men warm in the freezing cold weather, a group of rescuers lowered a duffel bag filled with blankets, hand warmers, and other warm things to keep the miners warm in the less than 25 degrees. To rescue the men from the elevator, a crane with a large basket was lowered partially into the mine. In small groups of 3 or 4 people, the men would go into the basket and got out from the ground.
