On May 3rd 1980, Cari and her best friend were walking to their church carnival. They were walking in the bicycle lane with Cari the closest to the road.
Minutes before Cari and her friend were walking to the carnival, a middle aged man, who just finished a three day drinking binge, left a bar and got into his car.
Speeding and swerving through the suburban street, the man, Clarence Busch, was heading towards the girls at a fast rate. He swerved into the bicycle lane hitting Cari, sending her flying 125 feet away. Busch didn't even stop to aid Cari, he just drove off. When Candace got home from her work day, her father and her ex-husband were sitting on the lawn far apart. She got out of her car to see what was wrong. Her father ran up to her and held her in his arms. Her ex-husband, Steve, looked her in the eyes and gave her the news no one should have to hear. Screaming and crying, Candace fell to the ground. Candace could not accept the news, and felt that Steve and her father were lying, but the pain in their eyes told her Cari was dead. A couple of days later Candace was going out to eat. She passed the spot Cari died only to see a police officer measuring the area. Candace stopped her car and talked to the officer about the drunk driver’s punishment. He chuckled and told her she would be lucky to see him in jail much less prison. Disgusted, mad, and lost, Candace drove off to go to the restaurant with her friends.
