In 1909, Carlisle’s football team was only average. With an average football team, their season was poor because of Harvard, Princeton and other dominate football teams. Since almost all of Carlisle’s star players disappeared, the coach, Pop Warner desperately begged his talented football players to come back. When his players such as Jim Thorpe and Gus Welch decided to come back, the football team finally had a real opportunity to make a difference in American football and the American culture at the time. Since Carlisle’s football team was all Native American, it would’ve made a big difference in American culture because it would’ve have shown that an Indian could be as good or better than a white man.
