Carolyn Rodgers born December 14,1940 in Chicago, Illinois was a leading poet of the Black Arts Movement. She focused on the issues of African American identity, culture, as well African American women.
During her younger years, Rodgers parents had a major influence on her life as they pushed her to pursue music which included playing guitar and composing music. Her first time experimenting with poetry was also around this time, but it wasn’t until her freshmen year at Roosevelt University that she began to take it serious. She graduated from the university in 1965 with a bachelor’s degree. Poetry was only the beginning of Rodgers writing venture.
