A. A wise woman called Carrie Fisher once said, “Stay afraid, but do it anyway. What’s important is the action. You don’t have to wait to be confident. Just do it and eventually the confidence will follow.”

II. Orienting Material
A. Tie to the audience: Most people know Fisher as Princess Leia from Star Wars, and some may know of her due to her involvement in educating about mental health issues. Fisher passed away about a year and a half ago, unexpectedly and it shook a lot of people. Me being one of those.

B. Credibility: I have been a fan of Carrie for years and always looked up to her. It is so important to have strong female representation in the media and Carrie was that for me and so much more.

I. Fisher had a significant role in film throughout her life.

A. She is most famous for her work in Star Wars 1. One thing is certain; Princess Leia was no damsel in distress.

a. She changed the way women were viewed in action movies, which during the late 1970s, was male-dominated.

b. Leia’s character took charge when she could and eventually upgraded from Princess to General throughout the movies.

2. Funnily enough, Fisher did not realize Star Wars was going to be a huge hit. She thought it was going to be a cheesy film.

a. However, whenever she was asked if she knew it was going to be a huge hit, she said, “Everyone knew it was going to be a hit. The only person who didn’t was George Lucas, the director of the films.”

b. Then again, nobody knew or predicted that Star Wars was going to be this huge franchise, and a timeless classic.

B. Fisher was famous for her role in Star Wars but is well-known for other roles as well.

II. Fisher was also well known as a published author

A. Fisher wrote numerous novels during her lifetime portraying her unique humor and wisdom.

1. The Princess Diarist was the last book she published before she died.

a. This book tells about her life as Princess Leia, and some words of wisdom and poking fun at the hardships she faced during filming.
i. Fisher was a feminist icon, who not only portrayed a strong female lead character, but was a strong woman herself.

b. Fisher describes what it was like to be Princess Leia. She says her, and Princess Leia are one in the same. People come up to her and talk to her like she is Princess Leia.

c. She noted how the director of the Star Wars films was adamant about her losing weight and kept her on a strict diet. And this continued with the newer movies shot 30 years later as well.

d. This autobiography won a Grammy award for Best spoken word album in 2017.

2. Wishful Drinking, another well-known work of hers, describes what it was like to live with addiction and her bipolar diagnosis.

a. This book was adapted from her one-woman stage
