Does Bedside Shift Report Improve Patient Satisfaction?
Change of shift and the handover of patient care to the oncoming shift is an important element of nursing care (Sherman J, 2013). Ensuring patient information is communicated correctly and effectively is vital to patient safety. In the post-partum unit at Mary Washington Hospital, an SBAR report, which stands for Situation, Background, Assessment and Recommendation, is used to ensure that patient information is transferred accurately during shift change. In previous years, shift reports took place in a break room, conference room or at the nurses’ station. However, in 2011, patient involvement in care was set as a National Patient Safety Goal by the Joint Commission (Radtke, 2013).
