Hazelwood School District vs. Kuhlmeier - In 1983 students at Hazelwood East High School in St. Louis County, Missouri submitted copies of their student produced newspaper to the building principal for required review before publication. The principal found two of the articles inappropriate and with no time to revise the paper he ordered that the entire pages with the articles removed from the publication. Three of the students disagreed with what they saw as unfair censorship and brought suit against the school. At first lower courts sided with the school, then the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in favor of the students. In 1987, the Supreme Court heard arguments from both sides.
