4. My interest in working in a research lab blossomed after working in Stony Brook’s introductory biology lab courses. Luckily for me, Stony Brook had a plethora of researchers who could use student help. I decided to email Dr. Martin Kaczocha, a former biochemistry professor of mine. I chose to contact him because his research seemed both interesting and foreign to me. He agreed to meet with me and he offered a position in his lab trying to understand the endogenous cannabinoid system and fatty acid signaling. My role in my first project was to test the analgesic effects of a fatty-acid binding protein 5 (FABP5) inhibitor when co-administered with other receptor antagonists as well as Freund’s adjuvant to promote an immune response in mice.
