Kidd & Scrimenti (2004) stated that, there were 649,917 unsheltered and sheltered homeless individuals in the United States in January 2010, including 79,446 family households with 241,951 people in those families. These estimates do not include individuals who are “doubled up” with family or friends because of economic difficulties or who confront eviction or other forms of housing instability short of homelessness as it is traditionally defined.
The Covenant House was founded in 1972 with the mission to come to the aid of homeless kids living out on the streets. It is one of the largest privately funded charities in America that provides vital services to homeless, abandoned, abused, trafficked, and exploited youth (About C.H.M., 2017).

The mission is based on faith and the belief that all children and youth have a right to love, respect and genuine concern. Their individual and shared spirituality permeates all of their activities. The mission of the Covenant House is to serve suffering children of the street, and to protect and safeguard all children. It also affirms five principles for service including immediacy, sanctuary, communication, structure, and choice. The mission statement is supported by the vision statement which echoes that:
The Covenant House will continue to fulfill its mission by providing shelter and services to children and youth who are homeless or at great risk. In the spirit of open intake, services will be offered to all youth who seek help, with priority of concern and commitment to those for whom no other service is available. We will make every effort to reunite kids with their families. We will collaborate with community agencies and associations and actively participate in community efforts to improve the condition of families and children. We will advocate with and on behalf of youth to raise awareness in the community about their suffering. (About C.H.M.,
