Marquette Catholic High School was founded in 1927 by the Ursuline Sisters. The Ursuline sisters were dedicated to providing education for girls, and taking care of the sick and needy. The Ursuline Sisters began teaching in Alton around 1859. The Ursulines have even founded many colleges, including Ursuline Academy of St. Louis in St. Louis, Missouri.
The Ursulines were founded by St. Angela Merici. In 1535 she was on her way to Brescia, Italy and this is when she started the order. She established many facilities to help people, such as an orphanage and infirmaries. There are two branches in the order, the Order of St. Ursula and the Company of St. Ursula. The Order of St. Ursula is a monastic group, and they have monasteries located all over the United States and Canada. The Company of St. Ursula is dedicated to living their lives like that of St. Angela Merici. They are completely responsible for themselves, and are responsible for their own dedication to the church.
The Ursulines are a very dedicated and inspiring group. Everyone can learn something from studying the Ursulines’ mission and way of life. The Ursuline Sisters probably still play a part in Serviam, and teaching kids good work ethic. The school is not only for girls, but young men as well teaching all students the importance of Serviam, and giving back to God. When the Sisters established the school, surely they wanted Serviam to be a part of the school. It is important that students, not only at Marquette learn how the Sisters worked and taught, and understand the importance of this in their everyday lives.
