Thesis: Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is an intriguing story in play and movie form, yet many aspects of the two are very contrastable
The play written by Tennessee Williams overflowed with the profanity of cuss words. The play consists of cuss words such as Lord, Jesus, or Hell. For example, when Big Daddy found out he had cancer he yelled at Brick, “ CHRIST- DAMN- ALL-LYING SONS OF- LYING- BITCHES!” ( William 95 ) When the play was conducted into a movie, the film was not able to have any profanity featured. The 1930 production code states, “ Pointed profanity (this includes the words, God, Lord, Jesus, Christ- unless used reverently- Hell, S.O.B., damn, Gawd), or every other profane or vulgar expression however used is forbidden. ” Even though the change in words was necessary for the play to become a movie, the lack of profanity caused the feelings created by the movie to not represent the feelings Tennessee Williams was trying to portray them in the play.…show more content… She is slightly different in the movie than in the play. In the play, she admits to sleeping with Skipper. “ This time I’m going to finish what I have to say to you. Skipper and I made love, if you could call it, because it made both of us feel a little closer to you. ” ( Williams 42 ) But in the movie, Maggie denies and apparently never has relations with Skipper. This is also due to the Hollywood censorship. The production code says any type of sexual activity could not be presented in such a way to arouse passion or morbid curiosity on the part of the audience.
