Breakups As Banky suggested would happen, the friendship between Holden and Banky inevitably breaks up—whether it is the “fault” of Holden or Banky or Alyssa. And this writer says this because it is complicated when a relationship fails and is impossible to identify all the interdependent causes (Weber, 1988). Ands is foreshadowed throughout the film and is suspected by viewers, Holden and Alyssa inevitably breakup. Holden engages in expression of what Weber (1998) calls “attributional activity” (p. 279): including obsessive review of the relationship, coming up with desperate solutions, and selfish indulgence that fails to consider all sides (Weber, 1988). Despite Holden’s attempts to reconcile, however, he is left alone. Trying to involve Banky in a three-way with Alyssa only results in Alyssa exclaiming that while she loves Holden she will not be his “whore” and in her slapping Holden and storming out, followed by the reluctant, than compliant Banky, who realizes too, it is over.
