The main theme in the book the catcher in the rye is innocence and this expressed through The Museum of Natural History and Allie’s baseball glove. Allie’s baseball glove brings a theme of innocence to The Catcher in the rye. Allie’s baseball glove is something that means a lot to Holden. He really missesd his brother Allie. The story behind Allie’s baseball glove was that Allie was very good at baseball and played in the outfield. The slow paced game of baseball can sometimes get boring. So Allie would bring a green pen to the outfield and write poems on his glove. Holden really loved his brother. Allie was eleven years old when he died. He was two years younger than Holden. Allie had leukemia and died. As Holden thinks about his brother, he says that he was the most intelligent in the whole family. The kid is singing the song “Comin’ Thro the Rye”. “If a body catch a body coming through the rye.” (116) Holden thinks about this deeply and even though it doesn’t say anything in the book in the back of his head he is relating this to his life and current issues. The name of the book is brought up in chapter 22 when Holden meets with Pheobe and she questions him what he wants to do with his life and Holden says that he wants to be “The Catcher in the Rye.” Holden pictures himself on a field of rye up on a cliff, with a bunch of innocent kids playing in it and he wants to be there standing by the cliff edge to make sure that none of the innocent children fall off. J.D. Salinger is trying to show that say Holden wants to protect the innocent children from falling into the darkness of the adult
