Phobe
“I sat there on DB’s desk and read the whole notebook. It didn’t take me long, and i can read that kind of stuff, some kids notebook, Phobes or anybody's all day and all night long.” (161) Holden view about people changes when it comes to children he adores. At this scene Holden has just returned home and is reading through Phoebes notebook/diary. Holden adores Phoebe. Even though he says “sometimes she gets even too affectionate” He is described as distant throughout the book. But, when it comes to Phoebe she is like an angel to him. Phoebe has just found out, being her intelligent self, that Holden has yet again been kicked out of another boarding school. Holden describes her as “not only intelligent, but also the best dancer ever”. Phoebe is just like an older sister to Holden because she is everything that Holden is not. She is smart and outgoing while Holden is antisocial and often tends to lose his friends. Another way Phoebe is like a older sister because older siblings are more outgoing and want to be in bigger things. For example, while Phoebe goes off about her concert and being one of the main characters, Holden would much rather be a side character like Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet. Along with that, older siblings tend to save their money and think things through. Phoebe hands Holden all her Christmas money that she barely even spent. At this point Holden is upset and thinks about how much Phoebe is caring for him even though he has failed many boarding schools and is now low on dough. Phoebe is everything Holden has ever expected of his little sister and he knows that she is growing up to take care of him instead of him taking care of
