Catherine II of Russia was born in modern Poland on May 2, 1729 born as Sophie Friederike Auguste. She was a minor German princess; however his father was able to arrange a marriage with the prospective tsar Peter of Holstein-Gottorp. This engagement resulted from an alliance between Prussia and Russia; to awake Austria’s influence. Catherine first met Peter at the age of 10. Catherine found detestable upon meeting him. This repugnant feeling growth throughout her visit, Catharina wrote that she ended up staying in one side of the castle while Peter stayed on the other side. When Catherine and Peter got married in 1745, before that Catherine had to convert to the Orthodox Church, even though her father was opposed to Catherine’s decision. Since that moment, Sophie was Catherine II. After the marriage, Catherine began to follow her mother’s desires and ambitions. Catherine began to study the Russian language trying to connect even more with her future kingdom and its culture. When Peter III succeeded to the throne, Catherine was loved by the whole Russian kingdom. Some years after Peter’s coronation, Catherine had her first child.
