The wall being built caused many changes that people were not too happy about. Cathleen explained, “I think you need to go through what the situation was like before, and what people really wanted and that was the freedom to travel, the freedom to a good, real election because we all knew our elections were fake,” (Ferguson). Throughout the discussion Cathleen shared a few examples of how the government limited people’s ability to travel. In one story she said, “when my mom was traveling to West Germany, none of us were allowed to go because they wanted to make sure she would return. In another story she shared, “so my grandpa had a sister in Canada. Here’s the funny part- my grandpa was only allowed to go alone and my grandma had to stay behind to make sure he came back. He goes to Toronto, doesn’t speak any English or French, and they’re like, ‘that’s suspicious. You’re from East Germany and you’re traveling alone.’ So they are escorted him, the Canadian police escorted him to a room, and questioned him. My grandpa’s like, ‘don’t speak English, don’t speak English!’ So for them he was suspicious because he was a male in his 50’s or something traveling by himself and they thought he was a spy, but in East Germany it was important that he travel alone because they wouldn’t let him travel with my grandma, so that he would come back home and not stay in Canada.” She concluded by saying, “so it’s, I don’t know, I think that’s what people wanted to change. They just wanted to live their life. And they just wanted to go places they want to go,” (Ferguson).
