Cathy Stohr has been one of four counselors for Wayne Central high school in Ontario, NY for a long time. I have known her since I came into the high school four years ago, and have gone to her for advice and many favors. She is extremely well-rounded, dependable, easy to talk to, and has dealt with many different types of parents and students throughout her career. Every family situation is unique, and for her, having the right balance of control is important for her students in succeeding. My focus for my paper is the effects of helicopter parents on kids when they transition to college from high school. Even though Mrs. Stohr does not work for a college or university, she still has encountered situations with helicopter parents as her students are getting ready to start the next chapter of their life.
I conducted a face-to-face interview with Mrs. Stohr on Wednesday, May 10th, in her office at Wayne Central. It was in a private, closed off area which made the ambiance feel professional, however her tone and our interactions were less formal since she is my school counselor. Mrs.Stohr has encountered these types of parents all too often, and she can tell right away who they are when their kid first comes to high school. She claims that helicopter parents are usually anxious and over panicky because of the lack of total control they feel they need to have. Additionally, Mrs.Stohr can tell when a senior has helicopter parents when they don't even know what colleges they applied to since the parents do all the paperwork for them. In these situations, she states that the parent is afraid and can't step back because they feel that it's their responsibility to make sure their kid
