Sophia experience many life changing event causing her to change throughout the war. In 1776, young Sophia Calderwood witnesses the execution of Nathan Hale in New York City, which is newly occupied by the British army. Sophia was terrified when she saw this man hanged and didn’t know what to do. She stated, “...I was so appalled, I could not comprehend his words.”(Avi 8) Sophia didn’t know what was going on because it happened so fast and she was so terrified. She also stated, “Have pity sir. For God’s sake!”(Avi 8) Sophia tried to help the men being hange, but didn’t do much to help and she only drawed attention to herself.
