How did this contribute to the Civil War?
Missouri Compromise
DATE: 1820
PRESIDENT: JAMES MONROE

It was between the pro slavery and the anti slavery factions it prohibited slavery in the former Louisiana territory north of the parallel 36/30 degrees north, except within the boundaries of the proposed state of Missouri but it also allowed main to become a free state which kept the balance between free and slave states Northerners didn’t want Missouri to enter the union as a slave state because it would shit the balance of power away from their favor. This was the reason they opposed any state that was acquired in the Louisiana purchase to be given this choice. It allowed Missouri to have slaves and maine became a free state so the balance was kept.

The south saw it that slavery would be legal out side of the southern area, which gave them hope that it would survive The Missouri compromise kick started the war when it drew a line between boarder and union
Tariff of Abominations
DATE: 1828

It was designed to protect the industry in the northern United States
Labeled the “T O A” by the southern detractors because of the effects it had on the antebellum southern economy
(protect industries in the northern United States (low priced imported goods)
Put Calhoun in an awkward position because since he was from south Carolina, and they were very much pro tariff, that he felt an obligation to be for it too. However- he also needed the support from the southerners so he writes an document called the “nullification theory” but does not sign it. This allows him to deny to the assembly that he wrote it, but he can tell his home state he did. To the Northerners it was called the Tariff of 1828. They were in support of the Tariff because they don’t really need the help from England. They are well off in their industrialization. The southerners gave the tariff of 1828 the name Tariff of Abominations

Southerners believe that the Tariff only affected them because since it created a tax on items that were imported that was higher than normal and the north didn’t really need to buy the imported goods because they were mostly self sufficient then it was an unfair tax. Made the south more angry because they felt that the economy was favoring the north
Mexican War DATE: APRIL 25 1846 – FEBRURARY 2 1848
WHERE:TEXAS, NEW MEXICO, CALI, NORTHERN CENTRAL, EASTER MEXICO, MEXICO CITY

Because of the annexation of Texas which Mexico considered part of its territory despite the 1836 Texas revolution The north felt threatened and was scared they ay become slave states. Their future was undecided. The North wanted all states to be free but then the compromise of 1850 came in. Texas to go in as a slave state- plausible because everyone that had moved into Texas were form the south and they all owned slaves. Was solved to an extent but also led to the civil war.

PRESIDENT: Andrew Jackson

Political Party hat was in proposition to the policies of President Andrew
They favored congress over the presidency and favored a program of modernization and economic protectionism.
End of the whig was brought about by the Kansas Nebraska act. The southern whigs were divided on the dispute which lead to another party which we now know as the republican party The south collapsed because of the anti slavery views and the internal conflict
The north was too weak so the party collapsed as well
The collapse of the whigs led to the republican party which is when Lincoln ran for presidency
