The Cecilio 500 cello is a beautifully crafted string instrument, hand carved using spruce and maple wood. This particular cello comes in a variety of sizes including ½, ¾, and 4/4; ½ and ¾ would best suit a child, while a 4/4 would best suit an adult. Figure 1 shows a basic model from the Cecilio website. Figure 1. Cecilio 500
Scroll
The scroll functions as a decorative piece on the cello, and is typically in a spiral-like pattern called a volute. The scroll is placed at the beginning of the neck and can vary in size, but is usually 204 centimeters long and 80 centimeters wide.
Peg Box/Pegs
The peg box houses the pegs, which are used to tune each individual string on the instrument, and is placed between the scroll and base of the neck. There are 4 pegs, which are black in color. …show more content…
The neck is approximately 270 centimeters long and the fingerboard is approximately 580 centimeters. The fingerboard is the hard surface used for pressing the strings to produce sound. The fingerboard must be made of a hard wood like maple, so that it provides the right “scoop” or indentation in the wood so that the strings may vibrate freely.
Upper Bout/C Bout
The upper bout describes the upper part of the body of the cello. The body has an hourglass shape, to allow the bow to pass freely over the strings. The upper bout is wider than the c bout, with rounded edges. The c bout is in the middle of the body of the cello, similar to that of a woman’s waist. This area allows for the musicians legs to fit around the cello.
Bridge
The bridge is a decorative piece of wood or similar material that holds the strings away from the body of the instrument to allow vibrations to the body. It is positioned between the f holes, but can be moved to adjust the string height. The bridge measures 91 centimeters wide and 92 centimeters tall.
