History of Cedar Point Amusement Park Everyone in the United States knows about one of the greatest amusement parks in the world. This park is known as Cedar Point. It is the number one rated park in the world. It is located in Sandusky, Ohio and is the second oldest park in the world. The history dates all the way back to 1870 and here is some of that history. Prior to the construction of the park, Cedar Point Peninsula was mainly a well-known spot for hunting and fishing. In 1870 a small businessman named Louis Zistel opened a small beer garden, dance floor, and bathtub on the peninsula. This started one of the greatest construction jobs in history. In 1892 the first roller coaster was built on the small little island. It was called the Switchback Railway and its 25 foot tall; 10 mph stature would forever shape the future for Cedar Point. In 1934 the tumble bag was one of the few rides added to the park during the Great Depression. In 1939 the dance floor and skating rink was turned into a ballroom with refreshment services added. Another big family favorite to be built during this time was the Midway Carrousel in 1946. In 1957 Cedar Point was bought out by two men from Cleveland, Ohio and in 1959 construction was finally complete. They continued to add roller coasters through the years though. In 1960 the Tiki Twirl, Scrambler, and the Cadillac Car opened up. In 1962 the Sky Wheel opened as well. One of the biggest accomplishments during this century was the Cedar Creek Mine Ride built in 1969. It was one of the first roller coasters to utilize steel tubular
