This movie is set at Forest Hills Northern High School, Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA. It is based on a true story of a high school football coach and special needs teacher, Mike Kersjes, in 1989. One man saw past the world’s perceptions of his students and showed them another view. This film addresses bullying, perseverance against the odds, unlikely friendships, possibilities, dreams and challenging society’s perceptions, as well as teamwork, leadership and growth. “It is a celebration of…reaching for the moon”, (Pascatte, 2012). One student had a dream to go to the U.S. Space and Rocket Centre in Huntsville, Alabama. This film is fraught with obstacles at every turn: The space camp wasn’t equipped for ‘special needs’ kids; their school didn’t believe in their talents; the community thought they should stay in their segregated classroom; fundraising needed was $50,000; wider society deemed them to be incapable, and the list goes on.
