Celia Cruz grew up in the neighborhood of Santos Suárez. In the 1940s, Cruz won a "La hora del té" singing contest, this helped her start a music career. Celia Cruz's mother told her to enter other contests around Cuba, her father wanted her to become a teacher, a common job among Cuban females. She started school at a school of teaching but dropped out relatively quickly. She knew that her father wanted her to stay in school but she also wanted a singing career, so she started at a school of music. While there though one of her teachers convinced her to strive for a full time singing career. She first started recording in 1948. In 1950, her singing career started rise when she began singing with the Cuban orchestra Sonora Matancera. There
