Companies have always tried to be better than everyone else, so it makes sense that they’d be trying to make people want to be on what they made more. This means that they have researched to figure out what the best formats are, how they should alert people to who has liked their post (document 12). For instance, they’ll withhold likes to see if the person they’re watching will stay longer because of it. The devices also keep people in a constant state of anxiety because they’re wondering when they’ll get another notification to know they aren’t being forgotten about (document 12). Advertisers have been paying large social media companies to get ads placed into people's’ news feeds (document 12). Today people would rather talk through a phone than meeting face to face in person (document 7). Without going out and meeting someone to they could be missing out on life changing interactions with people they’ve never met before. With only wanting to talk on the phone, people don’t build up empathy (document 3). When they say something rude they don’t see how it affects the other person and doesn’t learn that it’s wrong to do that.On top of that on average people spend 20.5 hours on their devices a week (document 11). Those are the hours they could’ve spent with their family, or learning new things about the world we all live
