Censorship In China Essay

Censorship thrives in many variations across the world. There is always a government or assembly that wants to suppress information to the public. It is this faction’s goal to manipulate facts and thoughts. Equally non-democratic and democratic countries use censorship in some sort. While, a dispute over whether censorship is appropriate or unacceptable continues today. William Shakespeare once said about censorship “And art made tongue-tied by authority.” (Mowat and Werstine) The general population should not condone censorship in any form it limits literature, news media, and the internet.

China with the largest amount of internet users has the most stringent censorship of any country. The Chinese government maintains a firewall to block content of foreign news sites that they view unacceptable. While, China is not the only government to censor the internet it is prevalent in countries that are controlled by a dictatorship or those that mask themselves semi-democratic The target for these countries is religious and political websites where opinions run contrary to that of the government. “I think that the more freely information flows, the stronger the society becomes, because then citizens of countries around the world can hold their own governments accountable.” (Obama) When governments censor the internet, they isolate their citizens from the rest of the world. This leadership can promote their propaganda and distort current events to meet their criteria. While, this distortion can foster negative feelings against other countries. Since, control of the internet is a useful tool for the government to influence the masses, it can use it to unite people against a perceived common enemy or to achieve a common goal.
