The Australian Constitution determines how laws are made within our democracy. It distributes power evenly across the three levels of government. Each of the 8 chapters and 128 sections outlines what role the federal parliament has and how the federal parliament evenly distributes power to the head of state, executive government, judiciary, and government agencies on what they can and can’t do. The constitution prevents our democracy from becoming a dictatorship and allows each person who participates to have a voice in our democracy. It also sets out how Australia is governed and how our structure is structured. It defines the system rules and gives the right to vote. To change the constitution, the federal parliament will pass a law to change the constitution; it will only be approved by the people of our democracy through a referendum. A …show more content…
A referendum is a nationwide vote to change a law in the constitution, and everyone eligible to vote has a voice through our representative democracy. The purpose of the referendum is to give all eligible citizens of Australia a voice through our representative democracy. When there is a proposal to change the referendum, a bill is passed by the parliament, then the governor general issues a write-in for the change, and then the Australians across Australia who are eligible to vote. Vote for our democracy.
