During the three-month probation, Alex tries to save the plant from being closed. He connects with Jonah, his old college physics professor, who helps him overcome the plant’s various issues. Jonah helps Alex and his staff identify the plant’s bottlenecks: NCX-10 and heat-treat, increase their capacity, understand the relationship between the bottlenecks and the non-bottlenecks, manage inventory in all work centers, and calculate the amount of material that should be released into the plant. In addition, while Alex tries to save his marriage, Jonah helps him and his staff deliver late shipments, look for new opportunities with the sales department, and enter new markets with fewer delivery dates. Eventually, Alex and his friend Lou are able to identify three important decisions for the success of any manager: knowing what to change, what to change to, and how to cause the change. Throughout the story, we notice the importance of teamwork in solving different issues. Teamwork creates human synergy. This does not mean that everybody should do the job the same way; rather, it means to work together and bring out the best in each team
