Q. 23- The protagonist showed the side of the black community to Mr.Norton that Dr. Bledsoe wanted to hide. This picture differed from the image he had constructed, causing him to be exasperated with the protagonist. “Then haven't we bowed and scraped and begged and lie enough decent homes and drives for you to show him? Did you think that white men had to come a thousand miles- all the way from New York and Boston and Philadelphia just for you to show him a slum?” (Ellison, 138). This shows that Dr.Bledsoe is trying to portray an image of a well structured black community by eliminating the side that seem unsubstantial in the eyes of the whites.
Q. 24- Dr.Bledsoe and the protagonist’s Grandpa have different opinions regarding the relationship between blacks and whites. Dr.Bledsoe believes that Blacks should lie to whites in order to appease them. “You’re black and living in the South-did you forget how to lie?” (Ellison 139). On the other hand, the protagonist’s grandpa believes that in order to survive in a Thwhite society you have to “overcome ‘em with yeses, undermine ‘em with grins, agree ‘em to death and destruction and let ‘em swoller you till they vomit or bust wide open” (Ellison, 16). …show more content…
Bledsoe did not give a strong and firm handshake considering he’s a man of great influence. It gives the reader an implication that the letters are not going to be beneficial to the protagonist later
