2. The soldiers who were free, like Thomas, were shown how the other blacks lived. They were shown the harsh conditions the others endured. For example, when Trip was getting lashed, they take off his shirt and we see the scars from his previous lashings. While Thomas was having the most trouble at training, like when he dropped after running while the other men were fine. Also Thomas showed that he was smart, while Trip acted more as a hot head doing as he pleased, Thomas was smart and acted on reason.

The white soldiers at first were not accepting of the black regiment. They would degrade them and berate them constantly. After their first battle, they started to respect the black soldiers. Finally, when they volunteered to attack the fort, they all were in support of the black soldiers.
4. The blacks were not treated as equals to the white soldiers. For example the black soldiers were not given proper boots to wear, this caused foot injuries. Also they were not paid the same. The white soldiers were paid 13$ dollars a month. But the black soldiers were paid 10$ per month and they had to give back 3$ because they had to pay for the army uniform. They were also given lesser tasks. At the start of the movie, they said that the regiment was only going to be marching, and not
