Maggie is described as “homely and ashamed of the burn marks down her arms and legs”. She’s also thin and darker than her sister dee her complexion partially due to the house fire she was in 12 years ago. In terms of personality due to not being seen as attractive as her sister and the shame she carries because of her burn marks she is very shy. Her walk like “a dog run over by some careless person rich enough to own a car,sidle up with someone who is ignorant enough to be kind to him”. Her eyes always looking at the ground and her feet shuffling “ever since the fire that burned that house to the ground”. When Dee goes to take pictures of the house Maggie is cowering behind their mother and when Asalamalakim tries to shake Maggie's hand it's “as limp as a fish and probably as cold despite the sweat” with her trying to pull away and him deciding to give up trying to shake it. Maggie isn’t much of an intellectual either “like good looks and money ,quickness passed her by”. She has a hard time reading and stumbles when doing so. …show more content…
Ever since she was sixteen “she had a style of her own and knew what style was.” Her feet “were always neat looking as if God himself shaped them with a certain style”. Dee is outgoing and courageous “determined to stare down any disaster in her efforts”. The friends that she did have during her childhood looked up Dee “they worshiped the well-turned phrases , the cute shape ,the scalding humor that erupted like bubbles in a lyre.” Dee thought very highly of herself always wanting nice things. Dee’s is also a very intellectual person possibly being the first person in her family to go to college she also loved reading; especially to her mother and sister “forcing words lies, other folks habits,whole lives upon us two sitting trapped ignorant under her voice”. Not only did she read to her mother she also read to the few friends she
