The essential question was written on the board for students to see and it was also stated by the teacher at the beginning of the lesson. This particular day, the essential question was “How are character traits different from feelings?” She began by inviting the students to the carpet and reviewing the two books they had read last week. Before this lesson, they had already discussed identifying a character’s feelings in two stories, What Mary Jo Shared and Dancing in the Wings. She activated prior knowledge by asking students how the characters in each book felt in certain parts of the book.
