In “The Thing in the Forest” each girl’s father was killed during the war. The deaths in their lives was the consequent separation that takes a toll on a characters physical and mental emotion. It also furthers the girls’ sense of loneliness and alienation to Feeling alone and scared. Penny and Primrose relied on to each other for comfort, love, and to be able to fill the piece they are both missing in their lives which is family. The developing friendship becomes a way to fight against the feelings of and confinement they feel due to being evacuated under the threat of bombs and separated from their families.
