In the beginning, Rosaura is very naive and believes that she is like the rich people. First, Rosaura wants to go to Luciana’s party. Though her mother disapproves, Rosaura says, “I’ve been invited because Luciana is my friend.”(1). Rosaura thinks that because she is invited to the party, she is like the rich people. Secondly, Rosaura defends the rich people. Rosaura’s mother says Luciana is not her friend and tells her, “You know what you are to them? The maid’s daughter, that’s what.”(1). Yet, Rosaura tells her mother that she doesn’t know anything about friendship because she likes rich people. It begins when Rosaura is not given the same presents that everyone else receives. Instead Senora Ines, “...rummaged in her purse. In her hand appeared two bills.”(1). This was when Rosaura realizes that she is different because she is being paid while the other children are getting presents. After being treated differently, Rosaura finally becomes aware of her position. Senora Ines final words break Rosaura, “Thank-you for all your help, my pet.”(1). These words bring Rosaura to the reality that the rich people do not see her as equals much less a human being. Rosaura breaks out of her naivety and becomes aware of her true standing amongst the rich people. Now sticking close to her mother (the only person she can trust), “Rosaura’s eye had a cold, clear look that fixed itself on Senora Ines’ face.”(1). Rosaura used to love and trust the rich people now she hates them and has lost all trust in them. After the incident at the party, Rosaura loses her naivety and loses her trust in the rich people she
