His thesis earned him a placement at the Wheeler Defense Labs at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) along with his friends Bender and Sol. He has the unique ability to see patterns in numbers which offer him the safety and ability to formulate algorithms to explain everyday occurrences. The safety contributes to his isolation and his attempt to define the ability to seduce and pick-up women through the use of algorithms. John was diagnosed with Paranoid Schizophrenia and has visual hallucinations, periods of confusion, paranoia and delusional thinking. While Charles and Marcee were both hallucinations, they were significant to John for what he needed the most. Charles was the best friend he never had. Charles helped John through the stress from social isolation and competition. He allowed John to engage in social drinking and moments away from mathematics. Marcee gave John the immense affection he never received by always being excited to see him and giving him a hug. Marcee is the handle John needs to retain his grip on reality.
