2. Research background information about the artist and their life.
Born on the 24th of October 1868, Charles Conder was an English, Australian Artist who focused mainly on landscapes. At the age of five, his mother passed away and his father sent him to school in Eastbourne, England. Although his father had chosen the school Charles attended he was unimpressed at his interest to be an artist and sent him to work in Australia as a trainee surveyor. Later Charles became a lithographic apprentice for a printing company that featured his drawings weekly in a local newspaper, Illustrated Sydney News. The painting appeals to the audience as it is a simplistic and vibrant painting that creates a sense of radiance and contentment. The first things you tend to look at in the painting include the lady dressed in pastel pink convening on a beach chair, a white weathered foot bridge placed right on the horizon, a well-dressed man in the right corner of the painting and a coastline that seems as if it stretches on endlessly. Although as you look closer you recognise new details in the artwork. The woman reading a newspaper seems to be lost in her own world not even observing that her beach umbrella has blown away with the wind. A man had positioned himself comfortably under the footbridge and leaves you questioning as to if he is sleeping. The man in the corner also stands out compared to his surroundings as he has straight posture and seems stern. The theme ‘The Beach’ has been demonstrated clearly in this painting as a coastal area is featured as the main part of the artwork with many components adding to the depth of the painting. Overall the painting communicates a relaxed and delightful mood towards the beach despite the fact that some of the characters in the artwork do make you question whether or not the people using the beach would be actually doing those activities at the time when the painting was
