The Orphan Trains Charles Loring Brace was just a regular man from Litchfield, Connecticut who came to New York to finish his degree. When he arrived he was very disturbed by all the homeless children (www.pbs.com). Charles Loring Brace created a program called “Placing Out”. This program was created to give orphans homes. Brace did not think it was right to just throw these kids in orphanages. In orphanages the kids never got to experience what love was. In the orphanages they would use cruel and unusual punishments. They would starve the children if they did anything remotely bad because they did not have that much food so they had to come up with ways to not have to give out that much food. He would send a group of homeless children out west to find better homes. Brace thought the west was filled with good people and a great deal of food. He would soon find out that the west was just like New York. In 1854, he sent his first group of forty-six children; age’s ten to twelve, to Michigan. This trip went perfectly. Every child ended up in homes within a week. This first trip was like his test run. Since that trip went perfectly he decided to send more and more children. He did not leave these children. He came to them and gave them good homes and nice families. He did his best and tried his hardest to give every child a loving and caring home. That might not have always worked out the way he would have wanted it to, but he always tried. Charles Loring Brace was kind of like Jesus in some respects. He gave the homeless homes and showed them love even when they might not have even deserved it. He had so much respect for these children and the families who took them in. It is a huge responsibility to take in extra children and he knew that, but he still helped get these children a better
