Charley was very proud of Buddy and always wanted Buddy, in his words, be somebody. Growing up, Charley would whip a wet washcloth on Buddy’s mouth when he would stutter. Charley said it didn’t want to hurt Buddy, but at the same time didn’t want Buddy to develop a stutter (Collier 145). Charley watched Buddy grow up and Charley was very proud of him. Therefore, when Buddy graduated, Charley told him, “But you gotta look good. You somebody” (Collier 147). About several years later, Buddy surprised Charley in New York. Charley’s wife, Bea, makes a huge meal and gives Buddy the leftover sweet potato pie. Charley gives Buddy a ride back to the fancy hotel Buddy is staying at because of a conference. As Buddy starts getting out of the taxi, Charley tells Buddy, “You ain’t going through the lobby of no big hotel carrying no brown paper bag” (Collier 151). For this reason, Buddy gets upset with Charley and storms into the hotel without the pie. For some reason, Buddy turns around to find Charley holding a brown paper bag filled with delicious sweet potato pie.
