What makes an unreliable narrator? In the case of Charlie Gordon many things. Some may say that Phillip Malloy is more of an unreliable narrator, however, some key factors point to Charlie Gordon being more of an unreliable narrator. There are three main things that make Charlie more of an unreliable narrator. The first thing is his limited view of the world. Another reason is that Charlie is ignorant of the world and he interprets what people say in a different manner. All these leads to Charlie Gordon being an unreliable narrator.

One reason Charlie Gordon is a very unreliable narrator is he is ignorant of the world in social situations. For example, in the book it states, “Then Frank Reilly said what did you do Charlie forget your key and open your door the hard way. That made me laff. Due to Charlie’s situations throughout the book he changes how he views the people around him. An example of this would be, “Dr. Strauss might be called a genius, although I feel that his areas of knowledge are too limited; I was shocked to learn that the only ancient languages he knew were Latin, Greek, and Hebrew, and that he knows nothing of mathematics beyond the elementary levels of calculus of variations.“ After Charlie has his surgery he changes his view on doctors Nemur and Strauss he then has more of a negative connotation when speaking about him changing what it might actually be. Another example would be, before Charlie’s surgery he looked up to Miss. Kinnenan but after gaining his intelligence he started narrating as if she was far below him once again changing what an unbiased view might look like. For most of the book Charlie Gordon has a biased opinion toward people therefore adding to the list of why he is an unreliable
