Charlie Gordon underwent surgery throughout the entire story of Flowers for Algernon. Before the surgery, Charlie worked at Donnegans Plastic Box company with his friends, he went to a night school, and didn’t care what anybody said about him. After the surgery, he had no job, no friends, no school, and no money. He had nothing, the surgery nearly ruined his life in multiple ways.
First off, Charlie had a job where he could get paid, hang out with his co-workers, and just have a fun time in general. For example, he could be exposed to more people, “Im glad Im going back to work because I miss my job and all my frends and all the fun we have there” (Pg. 227) Charlie would go to work whenever he could then communicate with his co-workers and laugh. “Then Frank Reilly said what did you do Charlie forget your key and open your door the hard way. That made me laff. Their really my friends and they like me.” His co-workers are always making fun of him everyday but it doesn’t affect Charlie it just makes him laugh and after the operation he is ashamed that he was friends with such people like Joe and Frank and if the operation never happened, again, he would be just fine. Another reason why it was better before is he thought his co-workers were always thinking of him, “Sometimes somebody will say hey look at Joe or Frank or George he really pulled a Charlie Gordon. I dont know why they say that but they always laff.” He thought they were always thinking of him until the operation then he realized what it meant to pull a Charlie
